The Cadwallader Room

The Origin of the Room’s Name

Cadwallader John Bates, a former sheriff of Northumberland, linguist, traveller, antiquarian, and historian. His love for history led him to buy Langley Castle in 1882 from the Royal Hospital for Seamen in Greenwich and began the task of renovating the castle to its true grandeur. Whilst the castle walls were still in their original state, the castle had some features added, such as the chapel on top, which was added by Bates’s wife, Josephine, created in memory of him and his passion and dedication to Langley.

During his time restoring the Castle, Bates unfortunately passed away in 1902 before he could complete his work; however, his wife continued his work in memory of him afterward. His grave is situated approximately 100 metres from the entrance to the Castle.
