The Percy Suite
The Origin of the Room’s Name
Henry Percy, the famous first Earl of Northumberland, married Maud de Lucy, Lady of Langley, bringing the Langley estates into the Percy family. In 1405, he joined a rebellion against King Henry IV. When the King marched north into Northumberland, Percy fled to Scotland. As a result, his titles and estates were forfeited, and Langley Castle was gutted by fire.
Henry Percy was later killed at the Battle of Bramham Moor on 19th February 1408. The long-standing conflict between the Percy family and the crown features prominently in Shakespeare’s play Henry IV.
