The Greenwich Room

The Origin of the Room’s Name

In 1749, Langley Castle was seized by the Crown from the Radcliffe family and handed over to the governors of the Royal Hospital for Seamen in Greenwich. Rather than viewing the castle as a historic treasure, the hospital was primarily interested in its potential as a source of income. The property housed rented farms, valuable lead mines at Alston, and smelting mills at Langley, key operations that provided the hospital with a steady income.

However, by 1882, the landscape had changed. The lead mines and smelting mills, once profitable, were now struggling due to growing competition from foreign sources. Realising the estate was no longer as lucrative, the hospital sold the property to Cadwallader John Bates, a former Sheriff of Northumberland, marking the end of its industrial era.
