The Tower Room

The Origin of the Room’s Name

Once a dreaded fate, being “sent to the Tower” at Langley Castle Hotel is now a luxurious experience, our stunning feature room perched high within the castle’s tallest turret.

The history of the Tower Room is linked to the Derwentwater Room, named after the Earls of Derwentwater, who met a tragic fate for their involvement in the Jacobite uprisings against the Hanoverian monarchy.

James Radcliffe, 3rd Earl of Derwentwater, played a leading role in the 1715 Jacobite Rising, which sought to restore the Stuart dynasty. Captured at the Battle of Preston, he was executed at the Tower of London in 1716. Thirty years later, in 1746, his brother Charles Radcliffe faced the same fate after his continued involvement in the Jacobite cause.
