The Josephine Room

The Origin of the Room’s Name

Langley Castle owes much of its restoration to Josephine D’Echarvines, the devoted wife of historian Cadwallader John Bates. After his passing in 1902, Josephine dedicated the next 30 years to completing his vision, transforming Langley Castle into the remarkable landmark it is today. She remained at the castle until her death in 1932 and is laid to rest within the grounds beside her husband. To honour his memory, she built a chapel at the top of the castle, with special permission from Pope Leo XIII. Today, visitors can experience this historic chapel as part of our Battlement Tour, where breathtaking views of the Northumberland countryside await.
